Gardaí investigating the killing of a 28-year-old man in Drogheda in the early hours of yesterday morning, are to send a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions following the questioning of three young men in relation to the killing.

Mr Russell Dean died in hospital after being beaten by a gang of armed men, who forced their way into a house at Elmwood estate on the Duleek Road.

It is understood the men were armed with a pickaxe and pickaxe handles.

Two women who were in the house at the time were not harmed.

Newspaper reports today say Mr Dean may have been a victim of mistaken identity. The Sunday World today quotes a Grada source saying: "Officers are following a definite line of inquiry but it is looking increasingly likely that they killed the wwrong man".
