GAA history, for the record

Sir, – In his Road to Croker column (September 13th), Paul Fitzpatrick lists six men who captained and managed All-Ireland senior football winning teams. I wish to add the name of another who achieved the double distinction. It is Peter McDermott, who captained Meath to take the title in 1954 and was coach/manager for the royal county's Sam Maguire Cup triumph in 1967.

“The man in the cap”, as he was popularly referred to, was also the Meath county secretary in 1954 and he refereed two All-Ireland SFC finals in that decade. – Yours, etc,

NOEL COOGAN,

Navan, Co Meath.

Sir, – Kevin McStay made a reference to Joe Brolly and his winning medal for Derry in the 1993 final. He states Joe fortunately won his medal in Derry's one and only appearance in the final. In 1958 Dublin, captained by Kevin Heffernan, defeated Derry who had defeated Kerry in the semi-final.

The final score read: Dublin 2.12, Derry 1.9. – Yours, etc,
