Sir, – In the US, Nasa’s launch of an asteroid-deflecting spacecraft, at a cost of $324,000,000 would appear to be tremendously wasteful, even if it does hit its target next year.
There is, evidently, no predicted threat from an asteroid at present.
If such a threat were to arise at some indeterminate time in the future there is no guarantee, given how things are on Earth at the moment, that there will be anybody around to press the launch button.
