The Environmental Protection Agency has reportedly found traces of a highly toxic pollutant in the popular seaside resort of Tramore, Co Waterford.

The agency are said to have found creosote in samples of effluent taken from a container cleaning premises located at Belvue Harbour.

Creosote contains the chemical phenol, which can be lethal if ingested or in some cases cause paralysis, coma and respiratory arrest.

The effluent is believed to have been dumped in a manhole near the Frank Cassin Wharf, which flows into the Suir estuary.

One of the directors of the cleaning company is believed to be a former Mayor of Waterford.

Water samples from Belvue and from Cassin Wharf area have showed signs of creosote, the EPA said today.
