Where can I find the list of minimum entry points for all the universities and colleges in the first round? I know it’s in The Irish Times newspaper today, but I’m trying to find it online. – Catherine

A follow-on question from earlier today: Do you know of any schools around Galway where you can study physics and/or chemistry only from scratch for the Leaving Cert next year? I’m not looking to repeat the whole Leaving Cert, only those subjects. - Esther
Two possibilities could be Yeats College or Galway Community College of Further Education. If they don’t offer this, they might know of some other schools that could facilitate you repeating only one or two subjects. You could also contact GRETB, who have a number of schools in the Galway/Roscommon area, and ask them if they are aware of any of their schools offering the repeat option for one or two subjects. - Brian
Does Mary Immaculate College tend to make many second round offers? My daughter was nine points short for her first choice course of primary teaching. I’m wondering what the chances are of an offer in later rounds. - Linda
This would be quite a significant drop. I cannot say that it won’t happen. But I would deem it unlikely that such a popular course would fall that much. But no one will know until CAO round two comes out Monday September 7th. - Deirdre
I have a bit of an odd question. I sat the Leaving Cert a good while ago, back when the points were calculated differently, i.e. an A in a higher level subject was awarded five points, a B grade awarded four points, so on and so forth. If I ever wanted to apply to go back to college back on my points, how would they translate to the current system? - Alan
Assuming that you are over the age of 23, you would therefore be applying to college as a mature student and different entry criteria would apply to you. - Deirdre
There are also entry requirements for joint-honours arts in DCU (DC009), which states you need a H4 or O1 in Irish if you intend to choose the subject. Is it correct to say you can still be offered the course if you have enough points and meet other requirements, and just not do Irish as an elective if you don’t have the sufficient grades in that subject? - E Guerin
Yes. The H4/O1 requirement for Irish is only if you wish to take Irish as one of your subjects in that course. - Brian
My son got no offers in the first round. The points went up and he missed his first choice, joint-honours arts in DCU (DC009), by seven points. You’ve mentioned in a few answers that DCU doesn’t offer second round offers. Is this true? Why is this the case? We will appeal the results of four subjects and if any are successful, he would have been entitled to the course. Is our only hope to get a deferred offer? - E Guerin
Yes. In my experience, and from looking at first and final round points, DCU does not make many offers in rounds beyond the first round. Different colleges have different policies in this area. Some colleges, while they would like to get all offers completed in round one, will still be prepared to make rounds in successive rounds. If your son appeals his initial results and the results increase, and he is then entitled to his first preference course, there is a strong chance that he may not be made an offer this year, rather a deferred offer for next year. - Brian
Pharmacy points have dropped every year since 2021. Do you wager that, for 2027, there will be pharmacy courses available for under 565 points? ATU and SETU currently sit at 544 for round one. - Max
As you mention, there are already pharmacy courses below 565 in ATU Sligo and SETU Waterford. The original colleges who offered Pharmacy still have high cut off points, but I agree with you – in my opinion, I think the points will continue to drop even in these colleges, maybe not to 565 just yet, but eventually. - Brian
If my son accepts his second choice and appeals his results successfully (therefore increasing his points to the required amount for his first choice), and there are no places available for the current year, I understand he must defer the offer until 2027. Can he still register and complete first year of the second choice course that he was accepted for? - Paul
Yes. He can do exactly that. He can move to his deferred course September 2027 and free fees will still apply. - Deirdre
My son got 382 points and is seven points short for paramedic studies at the University of Limerick, which increased by 20 points from last year. I have two questions. Firstly, what are the chances of him getting an offer in round two? Secondly, after viewing his geography script we learnt that his result was 69.4 per cent, 0.6 per cent off a H3 – which would give him ample points for the paramedics course. What are the changes of his paper gaining the three marks needed on an appeal to get him over the line? Do you think it’s worth appealing? - A Corrigan
I would recommend that you make an application to appeal. This opens at 10am on Sunday and closes again at 5pm on Monday August 31st. This can be done via your son’s CSSP. Appeal results are issued on September 25th and CAO will be making offers in round 5 on September 29th. The very best of luck. - Deirdre
My son was entitled to DARE but didn’t get his first choice in UL. He will appeal two grades. If he goes up 22 points, he will still be 12 under his first choice of PE teaching. How do we find out if he could have gotten the course with DARE? Can he be offered a deferred place with Dare for 2027? - Maedhbh
You could ring the Access office to see if you can get information from them. DARE places tend to be offered in round one, while a minority are offered in round two. He can carry his DARE eligibility forward for one year. - Deirdre
I have received no course offers in round one despite getting 400 points, as I didn’t submit the paperwork for my language exemption. The paperwork has gone through now, but I’m worried about not getting an offer for Arts in Maynooth University in the second round. Do you have any advice? - Alice
CAO will make you an offer if documentation is with them by a certain date before round two. It will make you an offer once you satisfy minimum entry requirements and cut off points. Liaise with NUI head office and CAO regarding your exemption form. The Arts course in Maynooth University tends to have a lot of places. Stay confident. Just get paperwork sorted. - Deirdre
Can you advise if DCU traditionally offers second or third round places for the financial maths and actuary course? If so, how much have they dropped by? - Sarah
No, traditionally DCU don’t tend to make round two or three offers unless in exceptional circumstances for a small minority of courses. No offers were made after round one last year. - Brian
Did RCSI give offers in the second or third round last year? I saw 733* as the cut off and later saw 732. What medical schools offered medicine at the second round last year please? - Max
Points in Medicine in UCC and RCSI reduced from round one to the final round in 2025, however the others remained the same, indicating that no further offers were made after round one. - Brian
I have been offered commerce in Galway and I’m 20 points short for the financial maths course. Is there an option of transferring into financial maths after completing first year in Commerce if my grades are sufficient? My Leaving Cert maths results was a H2. - Liz
This question is best placed for the UG admissions team or the Business school office. Just looking at the first year subjects for both courses, there seems to be a significant difference between the two programmes which might make it hard to swap onto the financial maths course. There appears to be more maths and computers on the financial maths programme. Send an email to them to see if there is a pathway to finance from commerce. - Brian
I have a SUSI grant for a college course, but I didn’t receive any offers. I’m now considering a PLC. What can I do with my grant? Can it be used next year if I enroll in a course then? - Kate
You should contact SUSI. There is a rate given for PLC students. You will receive the higher rate when you progress to third level next year. It’s best that you contact SUSI to inform them of this. SUSI will be liaising with colleges and this will be identified. - Deirdre
My son has been offered a course which he likes though it was not his first choice. When we reviewed the scripts we found 3 papers that were one per cent short of a higher grade, so we will get them remarked. If he accepts the place he has been offered but then gets upgraded and qualifies for another course, what can we do? Will he get other offers based on new points? - Maria
CAO will make an offer once he meets necessary entry requirements and cut off points. They may provide a starting date in late September. Another option might be a deferred offer. This is when CAO guarantee you a place for September 2027. This happens if the course is at maximum capacity and cannot accept anymore CAO applicants. If your son is made a new offer and this course has space, then he can chose to stay on his original course or move to new course. If his new course is full then he can continue and finish first year. Reapply to CAO with applying for one course only, his deferred course. He can then begin on this new course in September 2027. He will not be charged tuition fees in this case scenario. - Brian
My son has accepted a round 1 offer, however he is twp points away from his next choice in DCU. Does DCU usually fill up the first time round? - Denise
Going on past years, DCU don’t tend to feature too much in round 2 offers. - Deirdre
I applied for Veterinary Medicine in ATU and I have all of the required prerequisites for this course (such as work experience) and I have met the minimum Leaving Cert requirements too. I completed the Casper test and I was advised that I had achieved a 4th quartile result in it. My Leaving Cert points were 515 and the points required for this course are published today as 647 – which is a combination of Casper score and Leaving Cert points. I believe that my combined score should put me above the published cut off point, yet I received no 1st round offer. What should I do? - Kate
Your best bet is to contact the admissions office in ATU and outline all your details and see what they have to say. They are best placed to tell you exactly where you are in relation to Veterinary Medicine in ATU. - Brian
A follow up query from this morning: Is the critical date for the impact of withdrawing from a course on tuition feeds October 1, or October 31? - Anne
It tends to be October 31st. Here is an example of UCC policy regarding withdrawal: Ihttps://www.ucc.ie/en/academicgov/policies/admissions-policies/ug-withdrawal/. I would recommend that you contact the college in question and get this date confirmed. The best of luck. - Deirdre
My daughter received 531 points. She applied to UL, UG and UCC. She was short 11 points for UG. What are the chances that she will receive an offer in subsequent rounds. She applied for Speech and Language Therapy. - Mary
Being honest, I don’t see Speech and Language dropping 11 points from the first round points this year. There have been 2nd round offers in the past but not to extent of 11 points, so I can’t see it happening this year. There was a sizable jump in points for Speech Therapy this year as demand outgrew supply and unfortunately I don’t see them falling back. - Brian
My daughter achieved 625 points in her Leaving cert and 734 points when combined with HPAT. She missed the first round ICC medicine offers by one point. Is there any likelihood that she could get a 2nd round offer? - Caroline
It is always possible. Medicine offers in UCC were made to some in round 2 last year. Trinity and UCD made no offers in round 2 of 2025. No one knows until CAO make round two offers next Monday. Wishing you the very best of luck. - Deirdre
My son is seven points short of Primary School teaching in Mary Immaculate College. Is there any chance of a offer in a later round? - John
The points for Mary Immaculate, as I’m sure you are aware, have already dropped from 484 to 475 this year from last year, so a further drop of seven points is probably not going to happen in my view. I certainly wouldn’t be banking on this, I would be looking at any other options you have instead. - Brian
A follow up question from earlier today: My daughter was well over in points for three level eight courses, but was not offered any. We’ve checked again and she does meet the minimum entry requirements for all of these courses. - John
Is she exempt from Irish and MFL? Some colleges require an exemption form to be completed. Exemption from secondary school don’t automatically transfer to third level. You must apply. Could this be it? Please get back on if you need further assistance. - Deirdre
My daughter missed out on her first choice by 10 points. The points for the course went up 15 from last year. In one subject she got 69 per cent. Do you think it is worthwhile getting that subject rechecked? - Louise
I think that it might be no harm. You should view your scripts and decide then. Application for viewing of scripts has come and gone. You can still appeal regardless of viewing your scripts or not. Appeal results are out on 25th of September and will be followed by CAO round 5 the following Tuesday. - Deirdre
My daughter got 523 points, but her number one preference of TR086 increased from 521 to 533. Is there any chance she might get an offer in round 2? - Meadhbh
As mentioned above, it depends on what the people holding offers for TR086 at the moment decide to do with their offers, either accept them or not. If current offer holders don’t accept their offers these will be offered to the next most entitled applicants and if you are one of these you could get an offer in round 2 or 3. - Brian
You hear a lot of people saying to do a PLC course as an entry path to University, but is there any guaranteed route to high points courses like Engineering or Law? I’m happy to do a PLC if, say, an 80% score in a particular one would provide a route. - James
Some third level entry require candidates to obtain a certain number of distinctions (e.g. three distinctions, sometimes five or even eight distinctions). Courses at third level will reserve a certain number of places for QQI applicants. You will be competing against other interested QQI applicants for those places. Random selection can often be used when the number of applicants (all obtaining the necessary requirements) exceeds the supply of places. Hence not a guaranteed route. - Deirdre
I got 386 points and my backup course was 388. What are the chances I get it in round two? I received zero offers yesterday. - Victoria

My daughter got 529 point and her first choice course is 530, do you think she will get it in the second round? Should she accept her second choice offer ? Should she appeal one of her subjects ? - Aisling
She should appeal if she feels that her paper wasn’t marked correctly. Application for appeals opens on Sunday at 10 am and closes at 5pm on Monday August 31st. Some courses will appear in round 2 but not all. What colleges and course will appear will not be known until round 2 offers are made on Monday September 7th at 2 pm. - Deirdre
I didn’t get into Medicine because of random selection. Are there any records of Trinity and UCD giving second round offers in the last three years? - Victoria

A follow up question from yesterday: My daughter got 398 points, which was above her third, fourth and seventh level eight choices. However, she was offered none of those courses and, instead, was offered a level six course that she is really not interested in.
She has friends with lower points who were offered some of the courses she wanted, so she’s very upset and confused. Is this due to random selection? Is there any hope for round 2 offers for her?
Yesterday, you advised us to check she met all entry requirements and then contact the CAO for guidance. She does meet the entry requirements and we just received a generic response from CAO saying ‘they weren’t authorised to offer her level eight on round one and again to check entry requirements etc.’. Everything is perfect in her application, points and requirements. Do you have any further advice or is she just unlucky and we wait for round 2? - John
I would advise you to see if your daughter met the minimum entry requirements. Please get back on if this wasn’t an issue. CAO will make an offer once the candidate meets all minimum entry requirements and the CAO course cut off points. - Deirdre

It is too hard to say. It will depend on whether the course is full or not after round one. CAO will continue to offer places until courses are full. - Deirdre
My son got 488 point in the Leaving Cert and his portfolio for TUD got 120 marks. What are his chances of getting TUD architecture? I can’t seem to find the point this year. - Joan
TU832 Architecture in TU Dublin had a cut off of 635 point, so my sense is that your son is a good distance in points away from this cut off and may only have a very slim chance of getting an offer I’m afraid. - Brian
My daughter got 59.4 per cent in Maths, is it worth appealing this result? - Michelle
When she is so close to the next grade, she would have nothing to loose by getting the paper rechecked. At least she will know definitely at the end of the process if she could have increased to the higher grade. - Brian
Can I reapply for the CAO next year using my 2026 leaving cert points? - Rian
Absolutely. Your 2026 points are yours now - for good. You can reapply anytime with them, just be sure to use your 2026 CAO number in your application. - Brian
Do you know of any private schools that you could do one of the science subjects, such as physics or chemistry, from scratch for Leaving Cert 2027.?I know it is a new course with project work so it might not be possible. - Esther

My son was offered his fourth choice and accepted it. It looks highly unlikely he will get his higher choices on subsequent rounds, although he is appealing some subject results, which, if successful, would land him a 2027 deferred place. He has also been looking at PLC options that could get him a 2027 place via the QQI/FETAC route. With all this uncertainty, he is unsure that he actually does want to study his fourth choice. Is it possible to withdraw his acceptance? Or are we locked into paying fees for a course that hasn’t even started, and all the other consequential fees if he starts a different course in 2027? If it is possible to withdraw, are there key dates/deadlines to be aware of? - Anne
There are two key dates in the academic year for withdrawal of students. It varies from college to college, but it’s generally close to the following: Withdraw up to October 1 - lose no free fees, withdraw from then up to January 31st - lose half your free fees and withdraw after this date - lose all your free fees and have to pay the full fees the following year. - Brian
With regard to the queries raised on a forced deferral due to points going up on appeal: this happened to my son last year in UCD. He started one course and was offered a deferred place for this year. He does not have to pay fees even though he stayed on his other course. It’s a specific exemption for forced deferrals. - M
That is correct. If you are forced to defer, due to a successful appeal and your preference course has reached maximum capacity, you can complete first year and change over to a new course the following year with no fee penalty. - Deirdre
What are the chances of getting an upgrade on Chemistry? My son is two per cent away from a H2. - Max
I am assuming he is viewing his script on Saturday. This is a great opportunity to see if there are places where more marks may be possible and an upgrade may be on the cards. If he can send his script to his teacher that would be very helpful. Upgrades in Chemistry do happen, so view paper and get a recheck if any issue arises and hopefully he may get his two per cent extra. - Brian

My daughter got 738 points and, sadly, was not offered Medicine in UCD due to the lottery system. She had 625 points in Leaving Cert and I just read and article that says the Leaving Cert raw score takes precedent over the HPAT (i.e. 625 over 590) - Alison.
The scoring for HPAT will be changing for 2027/28 entry. You can read more on that here: https://www.medentry-hpat.ie/blog/changes-to-medical-entry-from-2027 In the meantime, random selection is a little different for medicine. Yes, they do go back to raw scores but obviously other candidates had 625 as well. Then random selection numbers are used at this stage. Sorry to hear that you got so unlucky. - Deirdre
My daughter believes that her Irish aural exam result was not taken into account for her aggregated score in Irish Paper 1. When we see the papers on Saturday her suspicion will be clarified one way or the other. If she is shown to be correct, will she have to go through an entire appeal or can she simply ask that they get their assessment corrected to include all aspects of the Irish exams? This would make a meaningful difference to her points and to the college she attends as she is on a high H2 and this error, if corrected, will push her into a H1. - Mark
If your daughter confirms that the Irish Listening Component score was not included in her total score for the subject then she should inform her school immediately. The SEC will be notified immediately and will send a form to the school for your daughter to complete. The mistake will be looked at, corrected and the applicants record amended. The SEC will inform the CAO of any amendments. Whether this will be in time for the second or third round - I am not sure, but the main thing is to bring this to the attention of the school the minute you confirm the error is present on your script. If I received 318 points and the minimum entry requirement for my preferred course was 357 points, what are my chances of getting my course in the next round 2 or round 3 offers? - Orlaith
That is looking for quite a drop. No one can tell until CAO issue round two next week. - Deirdre
I am considering lodging two appeals, but just one will get me the points for my first preference based on yesterdays offers. If the course is full, am I guaranteed at least a deferred offer for next year? I am worried if the points go up again next year I would lose out again. - Siobhain

Why was my son not offered anything in round 1? His points were at least 317 and the courses he picked were less points than that. - Patricia
This sounds like a minimum entry requirement issue. Can you check the minimum entry requirements for courses that he has CAO points for? Perhaps he needed to get a certain grade in English, Irish or Maths. Get back on to us if this isn’t the problem. - Deirdre
I am looking to potentially appeal two subjects which are on the margin of a higher grade. Do I need to build a case, i.e. make an argument, for the appeal or is it sufficient to just request it? - Joe
If you view the scripts and you see areas where you feel you could pick up marks, then there is a facility to allow you to bring this to the attention of the person remarking the scripts. If this is not the case you can just apply for the recheck and let the new examiner correct the paper without direction. I have applied for Graduate Entry Medicine and have a GAMSAT score of 56. UL is showing 56* currently. What are my chances of getting an offer in Round 2? - Anthony
We have no way of knowing as we don’t know how many are in the random pool. If I were you, I would give the admissions office a call and they may tell you your position in the random pool. This may give you a guide as to whether you are likely to get an offer or not. - Brian

A question was asked earlier if random selection is different for Medicine. The student has 730 and course was 730*. My understanding is that random selection is different for Medicine, and where candidates are on the same overall score (say 730), the Leaving Cert raw score takes precedent over the HPAT (i.e. 625 over 590). I just read this a couple of nights ago on one of the Irish med app sites. - Alison
My colleagues and I have never come across this so I have reached out to the CAO for an answer. I will post what I find out when we return tomorrow. - Brian
My daughter had Au906 (business and Irish, Sligo and St Angelas) as her first choice. She was offered her second choice and it turned out that ATU decided to cancel her forst choice without notifying candidates. Can they do this? She, ill-advisedly, despite all experts saying not to, put down a less high point course. Can she look for an alternative course for which she has points to male up for this? - Joan

My daughter got 532 points, but her preference course - law in UCC - went up to 534. What is the chance of a second round offer? - Helen
Last year Law in UCC started at 532 in round one and finished final round at 522, so based on this I would say it could be possible for a subsequent round offer. - Brian
My son got 465 points and was offered his third choice in DCU: law, politics and economics. He has DARE, so do you think there is any possibility of getting the civil law degree in DCU in the second round of offers? - Anna
DCU don’t tend to make a lot of offers in Round 2. DARE make most of their offers in Round one with a minority being made in round 2. But no one will know for definite until round 2 offers are released. The best of luck. I hope that it works out. - Deirdre
If my appeal is successful, I should be offered a place on my first choice course. This course would require me to secure accommodation, etc. Can I use lack of accommodation at short notice as a reason for deferral ? - Mary
It is the choice of the college, so I cannot say. But I am sure that they have been faced with this before. A very valuable reason. The best of luck. - Deirdre
I have all the qualifications for RCSI and the points, 739. I got awarded my second choice in Trinity, which I didn’t have the points for and was based on DARE. Assuming I am correct in what I say what do I need to do to have this corrected? - John
You should contact CAO. Email them via your CAO account. - Deirdre
Have you any advise for a QQI student who was offered a place in Round 0 in TU Dublin for Nutraceuticals, but missed the deadline - and was expecting an offer today. - Ella
Unfortunately, the student has missed the deadline and this place may have been offered to somebody else. I would contact the admissions office in TUD who are very helpful and ask if they can do anything. If not, all QQI have been filled they may be able to do something. - Brian

Initially, I would check if she met the entry requirements for these courses, sometimes a maths grade may not be enough or something like this. If these are all okay, then I would log into her CAO and see that all her details are correct - including her exam number. If everything is okay there, then I would put all the details into an email to CAO and seek their guidance. Use the contact facility in your daughters CAO account to contact CAO. - Brian
CAO points for ag science course went up in 2026 to 371 from 289. Could it drop down in 2027? - Patricia
It would all depend on supply an demand. Supply of places can increase, demand can change. Many factors cause points to fluctuate each year. - Deirdre
My son got 360 points in his leaving cert. He wants to do construction management in MTU in cork. The points have gone up 120 and are now 380. He didn’t get any offer today, what are his chances in the second round of offers? - Annette
Not all colleges make second round offers. Maybe give the admission office a call. Points fall and appear in round 2 when spaces are still available on this course. I don’t know the answer to this. Probably best to get information from the college. Do they offer a level 6/7 entry route into this level 8? Could that be another option? - Deirdre
My daughter got 532 points and she was offered in medical and health sciences in UCC. She would like to do biological chemical sciences but gave preference to medical and health sciences. - Bilal

We don’t know how many are in the 734 random pool to be cleared before someone on 733 will be considered and again we don’t know how many are in the course merit list with 733 where again random selection may have to be used. The answer to this is no. If she does one year on her third option she will have used up her free fees for year one of a level 8. Hence she will be charged tuition fees if she switches to course 2 in September 2027 and starts first year on this new course. Government will only pay for you to do first year once. If some people don’t take up their offered places then the next people most entitled will be offered those places, so if you are one of these people, you could be offered a place. I’m afraid we have no way of knowing how many people are in the random pool and what your position is in that pool. I’m afraid its just a case of waiting for round two and hope more places are offered in the pool and you are at the top of the list. Accepting or rejecting today’s offer will have no affect on offers in future rounds. CAO will make offers once the candidate meets the minimum entry requirements and cut off points. Only courses that lie above todays offer can be offered in future rounds. - Deirdre

Yes, if you don’t defer, then your new application is entirely a new application and you will get your offers based on your current points and the points requirements of courses determined next year. No, this is not possible. You will have to wait until CAO 2027 and place MIC ahead of SETU. CAO will only make offers of courses that lie above today’s offer on your CAO account. If you defer your first choice, then you can only apply for that course next year to pick up that deferred place. If you put your 2nd choice down on your new CAO application next year you will loose your deferred place. So you need to think carefully. If there is any chance you might like your first choice then consider accepting it to give yourself some time to see what it is like. If not, then you can do a whole new application next year applying for your second choice and hoping you are entitled to a place again next year. - Brian

There is always the possibility of mistakes. They are rare, but possible. Points will be published online shortly after 2pm and are now available on the Irish Times website. Regardless of how many CAO points he received, he would still have to meet the Maths entry requirement of O6/H7. - Brian

In some colleges, if you have the points for another course in that college and they have space they may allow you to transfer. Whether you get another offer in round 2 will have nothing to do with your appeal as results will not be out until the end of September 25th. If applicants who have been offered places on the courses above your 8th preference decide not to take up some of those places, then those places are offered to the next people down the course merit lists.
