Phnom Penh - Cambodia's Constitutional Council approved controversial legislation yesterday allowing the creation of a court to try former leaders of the Khmer Rouge for their 1970s "killing fields" reign of terror.

The legislation establishes the framework for a UN-assisted tribunal to put on trial Khmer Rouge leaders, blamed for the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people during the late 1970s.

"It will not take long (for the king to sign), only a few days," said the Prime Minister, Mr Sok An.
