Four-bedroom house on one of Monkstown’s top terraces

Ongoing upkeep and multiple improvements keeps De Vesci Terrace property in walk-in condition

The owners of 10 De Vesci Terrace in Monkstown bought the house 27 years ago. At the time, the house was in walk-in condition, and their ongoing upkeep and multiple improvements has kept it so.

Number 10 is not quite at the end of this impressive terrace, but it once was. Long before the present owners moved in, the far wing had been hived off to make a separate house, 10a, and it sold – in very poor condition – last year for €412,000.

At 329 sq m (3,541 sq ft), number 10 is a large and handsome four-bedroom Victorian house, with an asking price of €1.95 million through agents Sherry FitzGerald.

As is typical in period houses more square footage has been given over to reception areas than to bedrooms. At hall level are two halls: an entrance hall and an inner, more formal reception area, off which is a drawingroom on the left and a very grand diningroom on the right. Both have the usual list of period – decorative plasterwork, ornate fireplaces – as well as rarer details, notably the matching oriel windows in the deep bays.

Large second kitchen
The drawingroom doesn't run front to back as it does in most houses on the terrace: instead, it leads off to a small study but has glazed doors so that the main room still benefits from the light. Also on this level is a large second kitchen, in use when the main diningroom is used, and access to the patio back garden.

A large livingroom, utility room, bathroom and eat-in kitchen are on basement level, with the kitchen opening to the front onto a small terrace and to the rear to a small lower terrace, with steps up to the patio garden.

On the first-floor return are four double bedrooms and a family bathroom. The main bedroom is large and has decorative ceiling mouldings – the owners think it was originally the music room.

The back garden is relatively small because residents of the terrace are keyholders to a private garden in front of their houses – De Vesci Gardens, which span 4.5 acres and include tennis courts. The annual fee for its maintenance is €700.

Parking is on street.
