A man aged in his 30s has died from injuries sustained during an assault in Dublin at the weekend.
It is understood the victim, who was well known to gardaí, suffered stab wounds. The victim was named locally last night as Kevin Walsh, a Dubliner in his mid 30s.
Gardaí were called to an apartment in the Shackleton estate in Lucan at about 3am on Sunday by ambulance personnel who were treating the victim for serious injuries. He was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown but died there on Sunday evening.
Detectives believe he became involved in an altercation in the early hours of Sunday in which the fatal injuries were sustained.

The apartment where the alarm was raised was sealed off for an examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. Detectives suspect Mr Walsh was assaulted in the property, possibly by somebody known to him.
Gardaí were on Monday trying to piece together the man’s latest movements. Detectives believe he took a taxi from Allenton in Tallaght to the Shackleton area in the early hours of Sunday. The investigation team, based at Lucan Garda station, is also trying to establish if the man was with someone around that time, including in the apartment where he was treated by paramedics.
The deceased, originally from Tallaght, had previously served a number of prison sentences, including for manslaughter after initially being charged with the murder of another man.
Mr Walsh, then of Allenton Green, Tallaght, was 16 at the time he killed James Burke between September 22nd and 26th, 2005 at the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, Clondalkin. They had gone to a field to drink cans when Mr Burke, who was British, was fatally assaulted.
Mr Walsh was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years in St Patrick’s Institution, with the final five years suspended. He had more than 70 previous convictions, including for violent assault, carjacking, possession of an explosive device, robbery, handling stolen property and road traffic offences.
A postmortem was due to be carried out on his remains on Monday.
An Garda Síochána appealed to any witnesses or people who may have information about the fatal assault to contact Lucan Garda station on (01) 666 7300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
In particular, motorists who were driving in either Tallaght or Lucan between late Saturday night and 3am on Sunday with relevant camera or dashcam footage are asked to come forward.
Separately, a man is in a critical condition in hospital following a serious assault that took place in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
Gardaí were called to a disturbance involving two men on Patrick Street in the early hours of Sunday morning. One man, who is in his 50s, was taken to Regional Hospital Mullingar, however he has since been moved to Beaumont Hospital, where gardaí have described his condition as “critical”.
The Garda has opened an investigation into the serious assault and has appealed for any witnesses to the incident to contact Mullingar Garda station on 044 938 4000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
