**You can get an in-depth look at the weekend’s action with our GAA newsletter**
Check it out here:
There will be plenty of reaction and analysis from all today’s games on irishtimes.com throughout the night and tomorrow. We will also be back with another live blog to cover all of Sunday’s action, so until then we’re off to draw up a list of the top ten hurling shocks - chances are today’s Dublin win over Limerick will feature fairly high up on the chart. What a performance, what a win.
It’s only appropriate to leave the final word to this man............
Until tomorrow, keep hurling.
John Kiely: “I think we lost to a better team on the day. Dublin deserve great credit for their performance, to win that game with 14 men for such a long period is a fantastic achievement by them.”
Dessie Farrell says he hopes Con O’Callaghan will be available for their All-Ireland SFC quarter-final next weekend. The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Monday morning.
Eddie Brennan has spoken.....shows you the level of achievement this victory was by Dublin.
Here is David Byrne’s match report from that Dublin victory over Limerick.
[ Inspired 14-man Dublin beat Limerick in remarkable championship shockOpens in new window ]
Still, there is no doubt the story of the day is Dublin’s incredible victory over Limerick - playing with 14 men for most of the All-Ireland SHC quarter-final, the Dubs produced one of the county’s greatest ever hurling displays.
That was an impressive display by Tipperary but Galway were poor in many aspects of the game. Still, Liam Cahill is a happy man tonight as Tipp progress to the last four.
Denis Walsh has sent us his immediate thoughts after watching Tipperary overcome Galway at the Gaelic Grounds:
‘Tipperary are back in Croke Park for the first time in six years after an utterly commanding victory over Galway. A goal with the last puck didn’t spare any of Galway’s blushes. They trailed by 12 points at one stage in the final quarter and ended up losing by eight, 1-28 to 2-17.
‘Tipp scored 1-22 from play, five each from man of the match Andrew Ormond and Jake Morris, who must have been next in line for that award. Jason Forde was outstanding too.
‘Galway briefly threatened a comeback early in the second half when Colm Molloy scored a terrific goal, but Tipp responded with six points without reply and the game was as good as over mid-way through the second half.’
It’s all over at Croke Park, Dublin progress to the quarter-finals.
FULL-TIME: Dublin 1-19 Cork 1-16
Luke Breathnach makes it a three-point game. Dublin have the ball, they just need to hold it for a few more seconds.
70mins: Dublin 1-19 Cork 1-16
It’s all over at the Gaelic Grounds, Tipperary run out comfortable 1-28 to 2-17 winners. The result means the All-Ireland semi-final pairings are:
Cork v Dublin
Kilkenny v Tipperary
The sides have traded points but Costello has just added a free to give Dublin a two-point advantage.
69mins: Dublin 1-18 Cork 1-16
One point game again, Mark Cronin sends over a free for Cork.
67mins: Dublin 1-17 Cork 1-16
Paddy Small edges out a two-point lead for Dublin.
65mins: Dublin 1-17 Cork 1-15
Cormac Costello nudges Dublin back in front.
62mins: Dublin 1-16 Cork 1-15
It might look like game over at the Gaelic Grounds, but it’s certainly game on at Croke Park- the sides are level approaching the hour mark.
58mins: Cork 1-15 Dublin 1-15
GOAL for Tipperary. Oisín O’Donoghue has surely put this game beyond Galway now with his 59th minute goal. Tipp have been the better team throughout and with just 11 minutes remaining you’d have to feel it’s hard to see Galway staging a revival.
59mins: Tipperary 1-26 Galway 1-15
And now Cork have moved back in front. Seán Walsh’s 52nd minute point edges the Rebels one ahead.
52mins: Cork 1-13 Dublin 1-12
Lovely score by Mark Cronin to bring the sides level at Croke Park.
51mins: Cork 1-12 Dublin 1-12
Tipperary look to have broke Galway’s momentum from that goal early in the second half. The Premier County now lead 0-23 to 1-12 after 52 minutes. Galway still haven’t scored since their goal while Tipp have fired over 0-6 during that time.
Impressive response by Cork to that Dublin goal. The Rebels have scored two consecutive points, one from Colm O’Callaghan and the other from Chris Óg Jones.
47mins: Dublin 1-12 Cork 1-11
GOAL for Dublin. Brian Howard raises the green flag and puts the Dubs ahead again in the 45th minute. It feels like a big score in the story of this game. Dublin 1-12 Cork 1-9.
Dublin have drawn level at Croke Park after 43 minutes. Niall Scully’s point leaves the score at Dublin 0-12 Cork 1-9.
Tipperary have responded well to that Galway goal, replying with a pair of points. After 44 minutes, the score is Tipperary 0-19 Galway 1-12.
GOAL for Galway early in the second half. Colm Molloy gives the Tribesmen the start they needed to the second period, Tipperary 0-17 Galway 1-12.
And Denis Walsh has got in touch from the Gaelic Grounds where he is watching Tipperary v Galway:
‘Playing with the breeze in the first half, Tipp have been on top and lead by five points at the break, 0-16 to 0-11. The Tipp attack has been on fire and Jason Forde, Jake Morris and John McGrath have contributed 10 points from play between them.
‘At the other end Galway have threatened a goal, but have been let down by their final pass. Kevin Cooney forced a very good save from Rhys Shelly and Brian Concanon hit a wild shot wide of the target after Conor Whelan set him up.
‘Galway will need to find another gear in the second half.’
Here are Seán Moran’s half-time thoughts from Croke Park where Cork lead Dublin by two points:
‘Not going to plan for Dublin footballers, following up on the heroics of the county hurlers. Despite quickly and confidently building a four-point lead, two from Paddy Small and one each from Ciarán Kilkenny and Seán Bugler, for the second week running, Dessie Farrell’s team quickly lost the lead and here, the initiative.
‘Cork showed composure and patience on the ball to hit 1-3 without reply. The goal came from a line ball, which went to Ian Maguire and he picked out the run of Chris Óg Jones into space and he finished to the net.
‘Jones could have been another after Mark Cronin provided the assist but Stephen Cluxton made a fine save. Cork ‘keeper Micheál Aodh Martin landed the 45.
‘Dublin went into their shells, a familiar retreat in the absence of captain Con O’Callaghan and were actually trailing by four when Bugler took the initiative to shoot a two-pointer just before half-time. They’ll need an improvement or one of those baffling Cork outages to reignite their momentum.
‘Big 35 minutes to come in front of a disappointing 36,546 crowd.’
Here is Paul Fitzpatrick’s report from Fitzgerald Stadium where Kerry outgunned Cavan to book their place in Monday morning’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final draw.
[ David Clifford hat-trick helps Kerry beat CavanOpens in new window ]
HALF-TIME: Cork 1-8 Dublin 0-9
HALF-TIME: Tipperary 0-16 Galway 0-11
Great two-pointer from Seán Bugler, the first of the game in Croke Park. That cuts the deficit to two points.
Some high level trolling from Iarnród Éireann here after Limerick bow out of the championship!
34mins: Tipperary 0-16 Galway 0-10
32mins: Dublin 0-7 Cork 1-7
The Cork footballers still lead against Dublin but it’s all very tight at Croke Park.
After 27 minutes, it’s Cork 1-5 Dublin 0-7.
After 26 minutes at the Gaelic Grounds, Tipp lead by five: Tipperary 0-13 Galway 0-7.
The game hasn’t really caught fire yet and it doesn’t look like a massive crowd either. There has also been a shower of rain and the skies are grey in Limerick but for now Tipp are dominating.
Here is the early Cork goal from Chris Óg Jones at Croke Park.
Cork have turned it around at Croke Park. After a sleepy, worrying start, the Rebels have just hit 1-2 without reply to hit the front, 1-2 to 0-4 after 11 minutes. The goal was scored by Chris Óg Jones. Game on.
Tipperary have started very well in Limerick, the Premier County look much more comfortable and sure of their game. After 11 minutes they lead 0-7 to 0-3. Tipp have scored the last four points - Andrew Ormond, Jason Forde (2), John McGrath and Jake Morris.
Conor Burke’s reaction to what will be recalled as a famous Dublin victory over Limerick. He played a starring role in the win.
The 6.15 throw-ins are both in the opening stages.
Dublin 0-4 Cork 0-0
Galway 0-2 Tipperary 0-2
Here are David Clifford’s thoughts on Kerry’s victory over Cavan. Clifford helped himself to a hat-trick.
Back at Croke Park, Dublin fans are trying to refocus on big-ball matters. The hurlers are the story of the day now - and will remain so unless the footballers lose to Cork. Anyhow, there are some team changes ahead of the All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-final.
The big news is that Con O’Callaghan does not start for Dublin. He had returned from a hamstring injury to play against Derry last weekend but the Dublin captain drops out of the starting team again here this evening. Full-back Theo Clancy also missed out, which is a concern at the heart of the Dubs defence.
There are two Dublin changes in total - Lorcan O’Dell and Eoin Murchan both start, O’Callaghan and Clancy drop out.
For Cork, Ballinora’s Neil Loran will start in defence in place of Seán Meehan. On the bench, Tommy Walsh replaces Ruairí Deane.
Okay, you’d nearly forget there is still lots of action to come this evening. Denis Walsh has been in touch from the Gaelic Grounds. He is covering the Galway v Tipperary quarter-final for us and has sent this update from Limerick where events from Croke Park have not gone unnoticed:
‘There were roars in the Mackey Stand as supporters of Tipperary and Galway watched the final stages of Dublin’s seismic win over Limerick in Croke Park. All of a sudden everyone liked their odds.
‘Galway have won their last three championship games against Tipp, the longest winning streak in their history against their neighbours. For this quarter-final, they made three changes to their published line-up. Ronan Glennon comes into their defence in place of TJ Brennan while Conor Cooney and Colm Molloy start in attack in place John Fleming and Tom Monaghan.
‘Tipperary are unchanged.’
Limerick just didn’t come with any real energy to this quarter-final. For whatever reason, they just seemed off it this afternoon but that shouldn’t take away from what was an incredible Dublin performance. Limerick have led the way in hurling for much of the last decade. This is not the end of the road for them, but it is the end of the line in 2025.
The resilience and belief and defiance displayed by Dublin this afternoon was incredible. Did anybody predict it? And achieved with 14 men for three quarters of the game. Brilliant stuff.
And then Cian O’Sullivan netted a second moments later.
The quickfire goals in the second half were pivotal to the outcome. Here’s the first of those.
The scenes in Croke Park are quite something, pure unadulterated joy. What a massive display by Dublin, one of the greatest displays in their modern history. Outstanding.
WOW WOW WOW, 14-man Dublin have beaten Limerick
FULL-TIME: Dublin 2-24 Limerick 0-28
Diarmaid Byrnes drills a free low but the ball is blocked. Limerick gather possession back and get a point but it might not be enough.
74mins: Dublin 2-24 Limerick 0-28
Point for Limerick. Back to a one score game. Limerick will still need a goal.
73mins: Dublin 2-24 Limerick 0-27
It’s over the bar!!!!!! Seán Currie has nailed it from under the Hogan Stand. Dublin lead by four. The game is in the second or four added minutes.
Dublin 2-24 Limerick 0-26
Scoreable free hit wide by Aaron Gillane. The game has entered injury-time. Dublin lead by three and they have just been awarded a free with a chance to go four ahead. Wow.
Seán Currie with a monster free for the Dubs. This is on for Dublin, what a performance.
69mins: Dublin 2-23 Limerick 0-26
John Bellew with a massive score for Dublin. Wonderful strike from downtown.
67mins: Dublin 2-22 Limerick 0-26
Gearóid Hegarty reduces the gap to the minimum.
Dublin 2-21 Limerick 0-26. Four minutes remaining.
Gillane replies with a converted free
Dublin 2-21 Limerick 0-25
Seán Currie with a wonderful score for Dublin, they lead by three again. Five minutes remaining.
Dublin 2-21 Limerick 0-24
Conor Burke and Gillane swap scores. It’s 2-20 to 0-24 with seven minutes remaining. Donal Burke is about to enter the fray for the Dubs.
Gillane sends over a free, 62 minutes gone: Dublin 2-19 Limerick 0-23
Brilliant point-blank save from Seán Brennan from Aaron Gillane, super stop. Dublin lead 2-19 to 0-22 with 60 minutes gone.
John Hetherton and Cian O’Sullivan has just scored quickfire goals. Dublin lead 2-18 to 0-20 after 53 minutes. The biggest shock of the summer could be on the cards.
WOW, two goals for Dublin at Croke Park.......
FULL-TIME: Kerry 3-20 Cavan 1-17
It’s all over in Killarney, Kerry advance to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals after a 3-20 to 1-17 win over Cavan.
Limerick hit the front, English again. It’s 0-19 to 0-18 after 52 minutes. It feels like Limerick have made their move. Dublin must respond or the visitors will take control here.
Level at Croke Park. A great score by Adam English has brought restored parity, it’s 0-18 apiece.
With 20 minutes to go in Croke Park, Dublin still lead Limerick but the gap is down to the minimum. It’s 0-18 to 0-17 to the Dubs against John Kiely’s side.
Here is the goal that completed David Clifford’s hat-trick.
Back at Croke Park, after 40 minutes Dublin lead Limerick 0-17 to 0-13. The Dubs are taking the fight to Limerick here, but whether the 14-men can maintain this intensity remains to be seen.
GOAL for Kerry. David Clifford bags his hat-trick. Kerry needed that goal just to steady the ship but Cavan have responded almost immediately with a brilliant two-pointer by Paddy Lynch. After 60 minutes, Kerry lead 3-16 to 1-17.
Some really interesting fixtures in the last eight of the women’s senior football championship. Armagh will be kicking themselves after losing to Kildare.
The TG4 Women’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship draw:
Kerry v Kildare
Dublin v Cork
Meath v Tipperary
Galway v Waterford
Kerry appear to have fallen asleep momentarily in Killarney. Cavan have staged a mini revival - they have scored 1-3 without replay, a goal from Evan Crowe, a two-pointer by Oisín Kiernan and a point from Padraig Faulkner. Kerry’s lead has been cut, 2-15 to 1-12. Jack O’Connor is sending on reinforcements with Paudie Clifford entering the fray.
Kerry are pulling away from Cavan now in Killarney. David Clifford has just added another point to put the Kingdom 2-15 to 0-9 ahead after 46 minutes at Fitzgerald Stadium.
Cork are through to the quarter-finals of the TG4 Women’s All-Ireland senior football championship. They beat Mayo 3-8 to 1-10 in Castlebar. The quarter-final draw will take place in the coming minutes. We’ll bring you the details as soon as the draw happens.
HALF-TIME: Dublin 0-15 Limerick 0-12
Limerick have finished the first half strongly - scoring two points on the bounce. At the break, 14-man Dublin lead 0-15 to 0-12.
Here is Chris Crummey’s red card. Huge talking point in this All-Ireland SHC quarter-final between Dublin and Limerick.
This is really impressive by Dublin. They lead by five now, 0-15 to 0-10. They won’t want half-time to come because right now they are the team setting the tempo. Two minutes until the break.
30 minutes gone at Croke Park - Ronan Hayes has just sent over a great score for Dublin. They lead Limerick 0-12 to 0-10 with five minutes to the interval. Dublin have been great since the red card.
Dublin have responded well since losing Crummey. After 23 minutes the Dubs now lead 0-9 to 0-8. Since the sending off, Dublin have out-scored Limerick 0-4 to 0-1.
RED CARD for Dublin. Disaster for the Dubs at Croke Park, Chris Crummey has been sent off on a straight red card after only 15 minutes. Crummey was given his marching orders for raising his arm high towards the face of Gearóid Hegarty. Dublin furious with the decision, insisting no contact was made but they are down to 14 men for the rest of the game. Limerick lead 0-7 to 0-5 and have an extra man.
HALF-TIME: Kerry 2-12 Cavan 0-8
After ten minutes in Croke Park, Limerick lead 0-5 to 0-3. Limerick shooting towards the Hill in the first half at a sun-drenched Croke Park.
The afternoon’s hurling action is just about to begin at Croke Park where Limerick are strongly fancied to overcome Dublin.
Here are Seán Moran’s predictions on who will emerge from today’s two All-Ireland SHC quarter-finals.
[ Galway will need significant improvement to reach the All-Ireland semi-finalsOpens in new window ]
And here is Clifford’s second goal. Just look at how he decelerates after off-loading to Paul Murphy. He knew the one-two was on but after passing to Murphy, Clifford slowed down and with the Cavan players moving towards the ball it allowed time for space to open up ahead of Clifford. When the moment was right he dropped the hammer again, raced forward, took the return pass and finished wonderfully. Such a clever score.
Here is David Clifford’s first goal today in Killarney.
GOAL for Kerry. Guess who? David Clifford again. With 23 minutes gone, Kerry lead 2-6 to 0-2. This game feels done and dusted.
With 17 minutes gone in Killarney, Kerry now lead Cavan 1-6 to 0-2. Conor Geaney has added a point while David Clifford has kicked the game’s first two-pointer. It’s early stages but already it looks like Kerry will pull away here.
Big news from the TG4 Women’s senior football championship where Armagh have been eliminated from the competition. Armagh were seen as one of the favourites to lift the Brendan Martin Cup in August but the Orchard County’s defeat to Kildare this afternoon sees them pack up the tent much earlier than expected. Donegal, who lost to Tipperary today, have also been eliminated.
Black card for Niall Carolan, who has been marking David Clifford. Cavan are down to 14 men for the next ten minutes and the visitors are currently on the wrong end of a 1-3 to 0-2 latest score. Big ten minutes ahead - worrying for Cavan.
GOAL for Kerry. David Clifford nets in the seventh minute to give Kerry a 1-2 to 0-2 lead. Clifford had brought the sides back level moments beforehand. Lovely finish by Clifford.
Seán Moran has made his calls on who he feels will emerge from this weekend’s four preliminary football quarter-finals. And despite all the negative vibes around Kerry, he sees the Kingdom progressing beyond Cavan this afternoon.
‘Cavan will be trying to rediscover whatever it was that turned over Mayo but even if there is good reaction to last week’s grim reality, Killarney is no place to be taking a leaky defence.’
Paul Geaney hopes the defeat to Meath will act as a wake-up call for Kerry - starting today against Cavan.
“I think we need to nail down some things and need to find the energy that’s required to mount a challenge.
“Obviously, if you don’t win this weekend, you don’t deserve to be going any further. But it’s forced us into a one-game-at-a-time mentality, where it’s all about Saturday.”
After five minutes in Kerry, Cavan lead 0-2 to 0-1.
Paddy Lynch opened the game’s scoring before Graham O’Sullivan replied for the home side. Lynch has just added a free to put Cavan back in front.
However, the more significant news from the opening exchanges was the sight of Diarmuid O’Connor going off injured. Mark O’Shea has come in as his replacement. Another worrying injury for Kerry. O’Connor had been out with a shoulder injury but unfortunately his return has lasted only three minutes.
Changes to both teams in Killarney:
Tadhg Morley replaces Mike Breen in Kerry’s starting 15.
Cavan have made three alterations to the side named during the week - Óisin Kiernan, Jason McLaughlin, Seán McEvoy all come in from the start.
Darragh Ó Sé isn’t dressing up Kerry’s predicament after the loss to Meath:
‘In Kerry, there’s a sense of finality about the place this week. When it comes to football, you can’t fool the people down here. You can’t be going around explaining the Meath defeat away because we were down a few bodies. Call us pessimistic or realistic but whatever way you want to look at it, the mood isn’t great.
Meath are improving, there’s no doubt about that. But if you stand back from it, they’re still a Division Two team and they were missing a few of their best players too. That’s a team you should be dealing with if you have intentions of winning the All-Ireland. The final is in five weeks – if you’re not able to beat an understrength Meath now, how are you going to deal with the bigger tests ahead?’
The first of the men’s action will take place at Fitzgerald Stadium where Kerry host Cavan in an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final. Kerry certainly hadn’t planned on this route towards Croke Park but last week’s defeat to Meath has changed the Kingdom’s pathway. Malachy Clerkin took a look at where Kerry go from here.
The Tipperary women’s senior footballers have chalked up a 0-11 to 1-6 victory over Donegal in one of the day’s earliest throw-ins. Mayo and Cork will begin in about three minutes as the round three matches take place in the TG4 Championship.
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s live blog on what promises to be a hugely significant day in the story of the 2025 season in all codes - men’s Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and women’s Gaelic football.
It’s Gordon Manning here, I’ll be here all afternoon and keeping you updated on all the news from around the country. We have reporters present at venues across the island so strap in for an exciting Saturday.
It’s ice cream weather, it’s championship weather.
