Depending on your persuasion, that scoring timeline is a very satisfying/heart-breaking visual representation of Dublin’s demise.
0-11 0-7 down, at halftime, a few dubious frees they had but we hadn’t come out of second gear. We probably showed them too much respect. At half-time, we said no one gave us a prayer outside the group. Wee knew deep down if our players played anywhere near our potential we had a chance.

GALWAY HAVE DONE IT
Dublin’s reign as All-Ireland champions is over. They had chances at the death but couldn’t take them. Galway’s fightback in the last 20 minutes was epic and they’ve delivered one of the shocks of the championships in recent years.
75 mins: WIDE! Was that Dublin’s last chance? They manufacture the opportunity for O’Callaghan again. This one was on his right but he hasn’t caught it.
74 mins: Chance! It opened up for O’Callaghan on his left but he didn’t want it. Instead he passes it off. Basquel then loses it and Galway break clear.
73 mins: This time, O’Callaghan wins a free. Pressure on but he slots it. Dublin have about two minutes to find another score from somewhere.

72 mins: Dublin are panicking now and making bad decisions. O’Callaghan runs into two men. He survives with possession, just, but then Bugler tries a low, drilled shot from distance. It barely gets two yards off the turf and is blocked.
Galway have a chance to kill the game off on the break but Heaney sends his effort wide when he had men on the inside in space.
70 mins: That could be the game! A turnover gives Galway a breakaway score! They couldn’t get a left footer in the right spot to step inside and take the shot. Those extra few runs forced a loose pass and the breakaway.

69 mins: The scrum on the ground for the ball is ferocious. Dublin want the call, Galway want the all, the visitors get it eventually after an almighty struggle with bodies everywhere.
67 mins: Galway are in front! Heaney sends it over and these Galway scores are coming thick and fast, far too easily. Dublin are in trouble!

65 mins: This time it’s Galway who dominate the ball, hold it around the 45 and find the time to strike. McHugh comes from deep to send it long and over the black spot.
Walsh’s race is run. He’s been limping for minutes now and he’s finally given up his battle to stay.
63 mins: Dublin needed a score and they’ve got it. McGarry, only just on the field, pops up in space after more decent build-up. Over the bar.

61 mins: Problems for Dublin. McDaid strikes from distance and then off the kickout, Darcy takes us level! Double strike in the space of 20 seconds.
It might have cost them Shane Walsh, though. He’s stricken on the floor, it could well be cramp but he needs some help.

57 mins: Comer takes an almighty belt from Fitzsimons as the two men go for the bouncing ball. No malice in it, but it looks like Comer wore a shot to the head. He’s down for treatment. The Cuala man takes a yellow.

56 mins: That’s much, much better from Dublin. Slow build-up, side to side, Dublin control play nicely. Then they strike, O’Callaghan dancing past Fitzgerald, riding the contact to send the ball over with his right. The lead is back out to three points.

52 mins: Cormac Costello sees yellow for repeat fouls.
50 mins: It’s a one point game! Conroy on the left again. He beats his man to take the pass on the run, taking the point in stride nicely.
John Small, though, responds emphatically for Dublin. He takes the mark, slows the game down and strikes it over with the outside of his boot.

47 mins: After missing a chance himself, Comer turns provider. He lays it off to McDaid who charges onto the ball, powering it beautifully over the bar. The Dublin lead is down to just two! It’s seven minutes now since Dublin last scored.

46 mins: That’s a lovely ball from Conroy after the turnover from Mulkerrin. He beats Murchan, the Dublin sweeper, to put Comer into space. The defence from MacMahon, though, is excellent. Comer is forced to shoot off balance and it’s wide.
44 mins: Chance! O’Callaghan is in on goal and a green flag looks a certainty. It’s a great block with a number of Galway jerseys in front of him. That’s a defensive intervention that keeps them in the game. Costello misses the following 45.
43 mins: Walsh and Conroy both fire it wide after working themselves into good positions. Dessie Farrell will be concerned with the ease with which Galway are finding space, albeit they aren’t punishing them.
Walsh does punish them this time, though, after good pressure on the Cluxton kickout.

40 mins: That’s far too easy for Kilkenny. He shrugs off McHugh as if he wasn’t there. He should have done much more given he made shoulder to shoulder contact, but Kilkenny stays upright and waltzes through to tap it over the bar.

39 mins: McCarthy shows some nice footwork to work space for the chance. He takes aim from an acute angle but puts it wide. A second wide of the game for Dublin.
36 mins: The second half is underway! Straight off the throw-in, Paul Conroy points for Galway. That’s the start they need!
Dublin 1-11 Galway 0-8
A half of much higher quality than what we saw in the first game. Dublin have been slick, if not as clinical as they could have been given the middle of the half saw a number of missed opportunities down the park.
Galway have largely been dependent on Shane Walsh going forward, albeit Finnerty’s movement on the ball is winning plenty of frees for him to stroke home. Dublin will be frustrated the gap is only four. Galway will be content, but not happy given the lack of threat across the board.

35 mins: A free against Dublin this time, Finnerty is taken down while on a hard cut towards the ball. Walsh from just inside the 45 doesn’t miss. That’s his fifth, three from frees.

33 mins: Mulkerrin thought he had pulled off a lovely bit of D to wrap up Kilkenny. It was a strong tackle, and the referee has given the free, much to Galway’s frustration.

32 min: Dublin have an underhit pass from Costello drop short of the runner. Galway then have an attacking mistake of their own, Finnerty firing a wide.
Bugler ends the attacking malaise with a well-struck point from distance.

29 mins: Another point for Walsh. Galway have settled now. A bit better organised behind the ball while their off-ball runs in attack are sharper.

27 mins: Big chance wasted for Dublin. McHugh comes away with the loose ball after Bugler spilled it when charging towards goal. A rare win for the Galway defence.
25 mins: Walsh is on song for Galway. The way he leaves Small for dead, the defender falling over in his wake.
Down the other end, another O’Callaghan mark allows Dublin to point.

21 mins: Twice in the space of a few minutes Costello points from the dead ball. One a free, one a 45 after a lengthy discussion between the umpires about whether it was a wide or a 45.

16 mins: A Shane Walsh free narrows the gap for Galway just as Dublin were looking to pull away.

15 mins: Dublin’s build up play at the moment is very impressive. They open up a gap for Bugler nicely to add another score. Seconds later, a win off the kickout sees Costello add another.

12 Mins: Hawk eye time! No dice for Galway as Comer’s effort just slices the wrong side.
11 mins: Dublin go with the patient build up. They reset a few times, doing well to hold onto the ball under pressure. Sculls is blocked but Kilkenny scoops the ball before sending it over the bar.

6 mins: Anything you can do, says Walsh to his Crokes teammate Mannion. He jinks in off one foot to power home on the other beautifully.
Fenton, though, down the other end, restores Dublin’a lead.

5 mins: Mannion, though, doesn’t miss. Actually feeds him well and after a junk inside off his left, the Crokes man sends it over with his right.
O’Callaghan takes a mark shortly after and just like that, Dublin are in the lead.

4 mins: Dublin look to strike back with some quick movement to get the ball up the park. Kilkenny finds himself in space but his shot is wide.
2 mins: Galway strike first! Finnerty does well to beat his man to the bouncing ball. He feeds Tierney who, from the mark, sticks the ball over the bar.

Path to the quarter-finals
Dublin are Leinster champions (obviously). They then hammered Roscommon and Cavan to kick off the All-Ireland round robin phase. They then got a scare off Mayo in Croke Park, catching them in injury time to secure a draw. That leaves them today drawn with Galway.
The Tribesmen beat Mayo in the Connacht final to come into the All-Irelands as provincial champions. They then beat Derry and Westmeath before a draw of their own, this one against Armagh. Galway beat Monaghan last weekend to come into the quarter-finals off the back of a win.
