Wolfe Tone and dissenters

Sir, – Rev Myozan Kodo Kilroy labours under a common misapprehension when he writes that "even in the 18th century, Wolfe Tone offered the third box of 'Dissenter'" (Rite & Reason, December 15th).

Although he was himself a freethinker, Tone did not mean "Dissenter" to refer to a person without orthodox religious view. He meant by that term Protestant non-conformists; for him and his Irish contemporaries Protestant referred to members of the established (Anglican) Church of Ireland. – Yours, etc,

CDC ARMSTRONG,

Belfast.
