Madam, - I write regarding the league table of third-level feeder schools you published (Nov 14th).
Whilst I appreciate the need for schools to be cognisant of the percentage of their Leaving Cert students who enter our universities relative to other schools, I seriously question the value of publishing such figures.
Surely the more relevant question is how many students actually achieved "their" goal.
Many students opt for non-university courses or for careers such as the Defence Forces which are not within the university spectrum.
The more relevant question should therefore be, what percentage of students achieve entry to the course of their first choice.
Finally, I also question the necessity for the media to publish such results.
It merely pitches school against school, student against student in an environment which is already plagued with stress in a race for maximum points in the Leaving Cert. - Yours, etc,
