The tracker mortgage scandal

Sir, – In light of the record fine levied against Ulster Bank for its role in the ongoing tracker mortgage scandal, citizens rightly wonder why none of the extravagantly remunerated executives who orchestrated this amorality have faced consequences ("Regulator found Ulster Bank devised deliberate strategies' to overcharge customers", Business, March 25th).

But lamentable too is the absence of whistleblowers among the rank and file and middle management who carried out the executives’ bidding. Two people close to me were severely impacted by the scandal, and I don’t see how we might avoid similar future harms without sharpening our sense of solidarity. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Corporations don’t make decisions. People do. If we want moral decisions, we need sanctions against people. The responsibility for practices and decisions lies with people. Some very nasty practices and decisions were adopted by Ulster Bank. – Yours, etc,
