Retention of mobile phone data

Sir, – The European Court of Justice adviser tells us “indiscriminate retention of mobile phone traffic and location data is permitted only in the event of a serious threat to national security”, according to a court statement (“Dwyer conviction would survive ECJ ruling on mobile phone data”, November 19th).

Victims of murder don’t count, obviously. If we ever needed proof that the law is an ass, we now have it.

Sir, – Mary Carolan’s analysis of the ECJ opinion states that it “has huge implications for the battle against serious crime in Ireland and all other EU member states” (November 19th).

Surely there is an opportunity for the Government along with all other EU governments to ensure the European Commission proposes a legal way out of this appalling vista.
