Irish universities and league tables

A chara, – On Irish universities slipping down the world rankings, Carl O'Brien (Analysis, June 6th) writes: "Most universities now generate the bulk of their income privately. It is questionable whether the Government should wield such authority within a sector when it is becoming a minority investor."

The taxpayer could of course decide not to fund the universities and let them reach their full potential as private institutions. This would make the thorny issue for our politicians of deciding how to fund them disappear, and presumably so too in time the universities. – Is mise,
