Home retrofitting programme

Sir, – The proposed Government home retrofitting programme must rank as one of the worst investment prospects mooted in my lifetime dressed up as a "green" scheme ("Retrofit grants: €25,000 offered to households to help insulate homes", News, February 7th).

Apparently a €50,000 investment will yield a yearly benefit in terms of reduced energy costs of approximately €500.

A 100-year repayment on the investment is a magic money tree investment from parties that maintain on other issues that said tree does not exist.

The calls for Government to increase the grant beyond the proposed ridiculous levels will soon come.

Sir, – As a taxpayer in their early thirties earning a decent wage (and therefore not eligible for any State supports) but unable to afford to buy my own home, I was delighted to hear I would be helping to increase the value of someone else’s home to the tune of €25,000 by way of a State retrofit grant.

The system works! – Yours, etc,
