Sir, – I refer to Patsy McGarry's article "In a Word" (May 14th) and the use of the word "grand". It brought to mind an incident many years ago when I was touring with a piano trio. The manager of the town hall in one particular Irish town assured me that "Yes, we have a grand piano!" We were shocked to discover on our arrival that this was not a grand piano but an upright piano in very poor condition. – Yours, etc,
