Sir, – I had to laugh at Una Mullally's piece claiming that the Irish Government cares more about luring wealthy Americans to Ireland than caring for its own young people ("State prefers rich Americans to struggling Irish", Opinion & Analysis, February 14th).
If that were really the case, Ireland would need to amend its tax regime to compete with America.
If I retired to Ireland, more than half my income would be taken in tax, even though my assets were accumulated outside Ireland. When I then die, one-third of my assets would be taken in tax as the threshold to pass wealth to my nieces and nephews in Ireland is a pathetic €32,000.
The old sod is wonderful but not worth committing financial suicide for. I will stay in America, thank you. – Is mise,
