Deciding between food and heat


Sir, – We are disappointed to see the universal energy rebate measures taken by Government last week. They have missed an opportunity to focus on those for whom every penny counts and who need to count every penny.

Many of the families we support were, prior to the recent inflation, living life from bill to bill, struggling to afford the daily essentials their children need, particularly low-income and lone-parent families.

The recent rising cost of household bills has pushed many to the brink, if not to the very edge.

Before, the struggle was managing costs week to week; now it is the stark choice between one necessity over another, such as deciding between food and heat.

While increases in energy prices and inflation affect many in society, at times like these we need to target supports at those in greatest need, who are impacted most acutely. – Yours, etc,
