Sir, – It is astonishing that in 2025, handwashing is still not a standard routine in many Irish primary schools.
At a time when viruses like flu, RSV, and stomach bugs spread rapidly each winter, this simple measure could prevent untold illness, school absences, and strain on families.
While the importance of hand hygiene is well documented by organisations like the HSE and even a mandatory requirement in preschools, this critical practice is not given the same level of attention in primary schools. Without this most fundamental health practice, outbreaks spread faster and pressure is felt at home, in the workplace and on the health system.
The Department of Education and HSE should make handwashing a non-negotiable part of the school day – as routine as a rollcall. Anything less is neglecting children’s health. – Yours, etc,
