Sir, – Barry Walsh (Letters, February 29th) wants Egypt to allow Palestinians from Gaza to cross the border into its country. He contrasted it with how European countries accepted refugees from Ukraine.
There is a significant difference between these two cases. Refugees from Ukraine will be welcome back to their country when the war ends, hopefully successfully for Ukraine. If Palestinians leave Gaza and enter Egypt , I doubt if Israel will allow them return. Therefore, this would make Egypt complicit in a policy of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Israel.
Mr Walsh is mistaken in referring to Palestinians in Gaza as refugees. They are in their home country, albeit displaced by the Israeli army incursion. If they crossed an international border, then they become refugees. – Yours, etc,
