Sir, – I am of the opinion that the current redevelopment plan for Casement Park, in preparation for Euro 2028, is a poor use of funds and shows a lack of urban planning.
Rather than constructing a modern 34,000-seater stadium in the suburbs of Belfast in an area with average transit links, surely it would be more sensible to build a brand-new municipal stadium on a brownfield site around Belfast’s “Titanic Quarter”, in close proximity to the city centre and its transit links.
Post-Euro 2028, a stadium this large would likely be underused by the GAA, and so should also be available to Ulster Rugby and the Northern Ireland football team for big days when Ravenhill and Windsor Park simply don’t have the required capacity. Maybe the Irish rugby team could move a game up north. Casement Park itself could be repurposed into a low-capacity stadium, more appropriate for club and league fixtures, as well as use a training facility. – Yours, etc,
