Sir,– While the focus of your editorial on Saudi sportswashing was directed at professional golfers (“Golfers follow the money”, June 25th), the sentence that “Golf has always been seen as a selfish sport” might appear a little unfair to the 200,000 members of Golf Ireland and all the amateur people who play the game as an activity and for enjoyment.
A golfer who is concerned chiefly with their own personal pleasure and lacks consideration for other people would hardly bother to replace divots, rake bunkers, avoid slow play or help a playing partner find a ball. Very few exist. As an individual sport, golfers must depend on their own skills and can only blame themselves when the game does not go well.
However, like all sports, golf is a shared experience with others where you challenge yourself and your character every time you play. – Yours, etc,
