Journalist Boris Johnson won the safe Conservative seat of Henley in Oxfordshire by a reduced majority. Mr Johnson (36) editor of the Spectator magazine, told supporters: "It has not been a brilliant night for us but there will be other brilliant nights.

"It's the darkest hour that comes before the dawn. Be thinking of that, all you who voted against the Conservative Party. We will come back and we are capable of regenerating ourselves," he said. "Now let's go back home and prepare for breakfast."
