Nairobi - Sudanese rebels said yesterday they had attacked an oil-producing area in the south of the country, inflicting casualties and destroying oil installations.

"A special unit from the SPLA managed to attack the nerve centre of oil production in Unity province at Heglig town," a spokesman for the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), Mr Samson Kwaje, said in Nairobi, adding the incident had occurred on Sunday.
