Jerusalem - Israeli police yesterday started an unprecedented criminal investigation into allegations of illegal business dealings by President Ezer Weizman, David Horovitz reports.

Mr Weizman, who has been in office since 1993, has for several weeks been resisting pressure to resign over revelations that he accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from a French millionaire business friend, Mr Edouard Sarousi.

But the case escalated sharply yesterday when the police opened a criminal investigation into his affairs, having received new information.
