Cable communications operator Ntl Ireland reported flat first quarter revenues but profits edged higher due to lower bad debts and greater efficiency.

Revenues of £17.5 million were unchanged on the same quarter last year but a more rigorous credit policy lifted profits by 24.5 per cent to £6.1 million.

Ntl said the new bad debt policy together with a more streamlined operation also helped profitability.

The company ended the quarter with approximately 341,200 residential customers (including MMDS).

Digital television customers grew by approximately 7,100 to 78,400 (including MMDS).

Ntl offers digital and analogue television to homes in Dublin, Waterford and Galway.

It also offers broadband and telephone services in parts of Dublin.
