Flights bound for Ireland from cities affected by the power cuts in the United States and Canada have been delayed by more than six hours.

It had been feared flights from Dublin and Shannon to the United States and Canada would be seriously disrupted throughout today, but there have been no major delays yet.

Air traffic heading into the three major New York-area airports was halted overnight and delays have also affected Cleveland, Toronto and Ottawa, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.

The FAA said control centres and airport towers in New York and other US cities affected by the blackouts were running on diesel backup generators and that flight operations were normal.
