Case on alleged assault of garda during protest due in 2016

A legal case involving a 64-year-old man accused of assaulting a garda during an anti-water charges protest in Limerick last year will be heard in the District court next February.

Joe Shanahan of St Michaels Court, Watergate Flats, Limerick, is accused of assaulting the detective garda at a protest in the Greenhills Hotel in Limerick on November 24th last year.

The Taoiseach was attending a Fine Gael meeting in the hotel at the time.

Large crowds of protesters from across the midwest staged a protest against Irish Water outside the hotel.

At Limerick District Court on Wednesday, defence counsel Aaron Desmond said there was no CCTV footage in relation to the alleged incident and requested a date for hearing.

Judge Marie Keane remanded the accused on bail until February 18th next when the case will be heard.

A small group from the Anti Austerity Alliance and the We Won’t Pay campaign protested outside the court.
