A Co Monaghan pensioner was recovering yesterday after a robbery at his home on the outskirts of Castleblayney.

Mr Thomas Hamilton (86) was asleep in his home in Bree when four youths forced their way into his house.

After ransacking rooms they entered his bedroom where they pulled a blanket across the man's head and held him until they had completed their search for money.

The gang then left after taking a small amount of money.

Mr Hamilton was shocked but unhurt. Gardai appealed yesterday for information which might help catch the raiders.

The raid was the latest in a series in the north-east in which thieves have targeted the homes of elderly people living alone.
