Brussels - The popular image of European Union bureaucrats as overpaid was challenged yesterday by a study showing their earnings to be in line with those of staff working in other international organisations.

The study, by a Danish consultancy on behalf of the European Commission, found EU civil servants actually earned less than diplomats posted to Brussels by the 15 EU member-states and international staff at multinational companies in Belgium.
