Derry police investigate alleged assault

The PSNI in Derry are investigating an incident in the city which left a 19-year-old man critically ill in hospital.

Superintendent Dawson Cotton has issued and appeal for witnesses in an attempt to establish how Mr Michael Curran came by his injuries

Supt Cotton said: "We are investigating an initial report that Michael was assaulted however this is not clear at present and we are looking at other possibilities"

The incident happened at around 2 a.m. in the area of Bank Place/Shipquay Street which is off Foyle Street in Derry.

A police spokesman said in particular they wanted to talk to a taxi driver who was flagged down by the victim’s friend in Foyle Street while Mr Curran lay on the ground.
