A 49-year-old mother of four has died after she was struck by a car in the early hours of Saturday morning on the N60 at Breaffy, Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Margaret (Maggie) Burke was killed when she was hit by a vehicle at 3am on Saturday while walking to meet a taxi she had ordered.

She was taken to Mayo General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Ms Burke was living at Castlehill Park in Castlebar. One of a family of eight she was originally from Killasser, Swinford.

Gardaí have appealed to any witnesses or anyone who was travelling on the N60 near Breaffy Village between 2.45am and 3am on Saturday, May 16th, to contact Castlebar Garda station on 094 9038200 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
