Two men have been arrested this afternoon after the body of a 41-year-old Latvian man, named locally as Gints Intembergs, was discovered in the kitchen of a house in Tullow, Co Carlow
One of those arrested is understood to be Latvian while the other is Irish.
Mr Intembergs was well known in the Latvian community in the Carlow area and had been living in Ireland for about eight years.
One of those arrested was understood to be Latvian while the other was Irish.
A second man, also thought to be Latvian, was discovered nearby with serious injuries. He was taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny where gardaí are hoping to interview him.
Gardaí are appealing for any residents or visitors to Graigowen, Gortnahowen or Slaney View Drive housing estates in Tullow and who may have heard or seen anything between 6pm last night and 9am this morning to contact them at Tullow garda station on 059-9181160, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any garda station.
A postmortem is being carried out this evening by Professor Marie Cassidy in Waterford hospital.
An incident room has been established at Carlow garda station. The Technical Bureau from Garda Headquarters are still at the scene
Gardaí talked to residents of the mostly privately-owned Graigeowen estate on the outskirts of Tullow town earlier today, to ascertain if a commotion in the estate heard about 11 pm last night is connected with what appears to be a violent attack on the two men.
A number of locals in the estate have told gardaí they heard shouting and noise from at least one car in the estate, but some residents of houses close to number four where the two men lived, said the noise was coming from another part of the estate, and unconnected to the attack.
“The noise was made by foreign nationals around the back so people are getting confused” said one neighbour who declined to give her name.
She said the two Latvian men had not been in the house, which she said was rented by them, for more then a few months. “They were very quiet” she said.
Another neighbour said she thought people were travelling back and forth between two houses in the estate during the night.
Two women who said they were concerned for the large number of children in the estate maintained the injured Latvian had been discovered in the vicinity of the nearby Cheshire Home shortly after 9am this morning, a move which may have prompted the discovery of his housemate’s body.
Gardaí say they have not ruled out the possibility of a third party being involved in the incident.
This afternoon neighbours could be seen standing around in groups of twos and threes as a large contingent of gardaí came and went from the house.
