Police in Northern Ireland arrested a man on Wednesday in relation to the murder of two RUC officers 29 years ago.

The 54-year-old male was detained at a police station in Belfast, where he was questioned over the shooting of detective constables Michael Malone (35) and Ernest Carson (50), who were killed during an IRA gun attack in the city.

The Special Branch detectives were in plain clothes when they were killed in the Liverpool Bar close to a passenger ferry terminal on August 26th, 1987.

Another police officer and a civilian were also wounded during the incident in Donegall Quay.

The man was released later, pending a report to Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service.

The PSNI has asked members of the public to come forward if they have any information on the case.

“Although these murders happened a long time ago, police would continue to appeal to anyone with information about the shooting and those involved to come forward,” a spokesman said.
