The man is known to gardaí and aligned to the Hutch side of the feud which has claimed 12 lives to date.

Gardaí had the couple and their vehicle under surveillance. A statement following the operation said it was specifically targeted at organised crime.

Sources have said that while there has been a cooling period in the ongoing gangland dispute, both sides are still plotting against their rivals with a view to committing further killings.

The male suspect is expected to appear before a sitting of Dublin District Court on Saturday morning charged in connection with the investigation.
