The columnist and broadcaster John Diamond has died following a long battle with throat cancer.

Mr Diamond (47), husband of journalist and food writer Nigella Lawson, was diagnosed with the illness in 1997 and died yesterday morning.

The former teacher wrote a touching column in the London Times describing his battle with the disease. He also went on to write a book - C: Because Cowards Get Cancer Too - which catalogued his treatment for the illness. Mr Diamond died at London's Royal Marsden Hospital where he had been admitted on Wednesday.

Mr Diamond and Ms Lawson were married in Venice in 1992 and had two children, Cosima (7) and Bruno (4). He was contributor to the Daily Express, the Sunday Telegraph and the Observer for many years. His regular columns outlining his battle with the disease were praised by cancer charities for shedding light on the illness.

His book was adapted for stage by Victoria Coren, and the play, A Lump In My Throat, was staged in London and at the Edinburgh Festival.
