Two people were arrest tonight after violence flared in the flashpoint Whitewell area of north Belfast.

The two arrests followed a report from residents living in Serpentine Gardens that reported a loyalist gang had attacked their homes, breaking windows.

Police moved into the area and were speaking to community representatives in a bid to quell the trouble.

A police spokeswoman later said the area appeared to be relatively calm at the moment but they were continuing to monitor the situation.

Mr Brian Dunn, a community worker from the loyalist White City estate, said the trouble began when nationalists attacked homes in Gunnell Hill.

"There is a heavy police presence in the area and things are relatively quiet at the moment," he added.
