€15,000 taken in raid on Dublin house

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses following a violent burglary in south Dublin yesterday morning

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses following a violent burglary in south Dublin yesterday morning. A man was held up by two armed men at his home on Glen Drive, The Park, Cabinteely, shortly after 8am and €15,000 was stolen.

The two intruders, who were wearing dark clothes and balaclavas, gained access to the house after the man's wife had left to take their two children to school.

Wielding a knife and a handgun, they demanded money and forced the man into an office in his home. They took €15,000 as well as a legally held firearm they found there. During the raid they beat the man and he received a head injury. They then tied him up and escaped to a waiting car.

The man managed to free himself and attract the attention of a motorist, who contacted gardaí. He was brought to Loughlinstown hospital.

One of the raiders, thought to be in his late 20s or early 30s, was described as 6ft 2in tall, of large build and with a south Dublin accent.

The second man, in his early 20s, was stocky and approximately 5ft 7in.

Det Insp Eamonn O'Reilly said parents dropping their children to a nearby creche may have seen something suspicious. "They must have had transport and they left the house wearing balaclavas and carrying a shotgun."

Anyone with information is asked to call Cabinteely Garda station on 01-666-5400.
