John Wilson: Two super-value bottles at SuperValu

Wines for the Weekend: A Rhone red down from €21 to €12 and a Chilean Sauvignon for €8

SuperValu started its Easter wine offer yesterday, with a range of wines at reduced prices. Most of the wines will be familiar to regular shoppers there. Two stand out. The Carmen Insigne Sauvignon Blanc, from Chile, is well worth a try at €8 per bottle. It is made in a richer style, but still with those Sauvignon aromas and refreshing acidity. Vacqueyras is one of the lesser-known names of the southern Rhone, but its wines can be every bit as good as those from Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are full-bodied and warming, perfect for the last of those cold evenings.

Carmen Insigne Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Central Valley, €8 (down from €11.50)
Nicely aromatic, with plump, succulent pineapple and peach fruits cut through with lime zest. Try it solo, or with seafood or white meats. Herby prawn dishes would be perfect with this.

Vacqueyras 2018, Rémy Ferbras, €12 (down from €20.99)
Rich and rounded, with smooth, dark fruits, spices and herbal notes. One to drink alongside substantial dishes – casseroles and roasts of lamb or beef.
