Weekend wines: Two from lesser-known regions packing plenty of punch

A Picpoul aperitif and an Alentejo with kick for last of those summer barbecues

Molloys Liquor Stores has seven branches around Dublin and delivers nationwide. Both of today’s wines are exclusive to them.

Picpoul de Pinet comes from vineyards around the Étang de Thau in the Languedoc. This lagoon is home to many oyster and mussel farms. Not surprisingly, the wine goes very well with shellfish.

The Alentejo is a vast region in the hot, sunny centre of Portugal. It is home to some of the best value wines, the reds in particular. Most are big and powerful and full of ripe fruit.

Plump, rounded peach fruits and a soft finish. This would make a nice aperitif, or you could try it with shellfish.
