Two Macedonian wines big on flavour and light on the pocket

Wines for the Weekend: an affordable Assyrtiko and Primitivo produced close to home

Two wines from Macedonia, both available in Aldi

Macedonia was the subject of a dispute recently, with Greece and its neighbour claiming ownership of the name. It has since been resolved, and we now have the Republic of North Macedonia, and the Greek province of Macedonia. This week one wine from each.

Assyrtiko, from the island of Santorini, is deservedly popular but expensive. The same grape variety is also grown on the mainland where it produces wines that are not quite as good, but certainly a lot cheaper. The wine below is a painless introduction to this variety.

It is believed that the Primitivo grape originated in Croatia and Montenegro, from where it was taken to the south of Italy, and onwards to California where it is known as Zinfandel. It is therefore not surprising that it turns up in Macedonia, close to its original home.
