John Wilson: Two classic Italian wines that won’t break the bank

Wines for the Weekend: A Chianti and a Gavi from Tesco to enjoy over Christmas

Two classic Italian wines from Tesco: a Gavi and a Chianti

Two classic Italian wines from Tesco this week. Gavi is the name of a town, a region and a wine. The grape variety is cortese, only really found in this part of Piemonte. The wines are generally refreshing and dry.

Chianti Classico is in the very heart of the wide Chianti region, and produces the best wines, using the Sangiovese grape. Riserva wines will have been aged for at least 24 months in wooden barrels before release.

In addition to these wines, Tesco also has four wines from their Finest* range that are worth trying out. The lower prices are for clubcard customers only. The Viña del Cura Rioja Reserva (€15/€12) would go well with turkey while the Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon (€15/€12) would be good with roast beef. Lovers of Marlborough sauvignon blanc should try out the zingy fresh western Australian Sauvignon Sémillon (€12/€10), or if you want a real treat try out the Finest* Chablis 1er cru €26/€18.
