Some less expensive bottles of wine can lack flavour, but not this one

Wines for the Weekend: These two Italian wines from Aldi offer great value for money

Specially Selected Castellore Gavi 2023 and Specially Selected Toscana Rosso 2022
Specially Selected Castellore Gavi 2023 and Specially Selected Toscana Rosso 2022

Two Italian wines from Aldi this week, both offering great value for money. Gavi is in Piemonte in northwest Italy. Made from the Cortese grape, the wines are usually light and fresh. Some less expensive versions can lack flavour, but not this one from Aldi.

For our red wine we move down to Tuscany. Here the Sangiovese grape is responsible for some of the region’s greatest red wines, including Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. While this wine may not reach those lofty heights it does offer good value for money.

Specially Selected Castellore Gavi 2023

12% abv, €9.99

Crisp and refreshing with zesty lemon and green apple fruits, finishing dry. A good sipping wine that also pairs well with shellfish or creamy pasta dishes.

Specially Selected Toscana Rosso 2022

14% abv, €10.99

Made from the Sangiovese grape, this is a medium- to full-bodied wine with concentrated dark fruits, subtle spice and some drying tannins. Perfect with a steak or roast lamb.
