John Wilson: Lidl stocks up on elegant, flavoursome wines from south of the equator

Wines for the Weekend: Four new Sauvignon Blancs and a couple of tasty Malbecs

A brace of excellent wines available this week.
A brace of excellent wines available this week.

This week we look to the southern hemisphere for our wines. Lidl has a new range, available now and for the next few weeks, all from south of the equator. It includes four Sauvignon Blancs and a range of different red wines.

In addition to the white wine below, they are offering tasty This Wine Plants a Tree Sauvignon (€8.99), and the richer, rounder Taming the Tiger Chardonnay (€9.99).

From the red wines, I enjoyed two wines from Doña Paula in Argentina. As well as the Estate Malbec below, Lidl has the Doña Paula Black Edition (€10.99), a blend of three grapes including Malbec. Grapes grown at higher altitudes produce wines with greater intensity of flavour and more elegance. The Estate Malbec is a good example.

Beyond Belief 2024, Western Cape, South Africa

Lightly aromatic with clean lime zest and kiwi fruits. A good easy-drinking wine to enjoy by itself or with salads and white fish.

Doña Paula Estate High Altitude 2022, Uco Valley, Argentina

Fresh concentrated dark fruits with smooth tannins on the finish. This would go well with most red meats or pork, but a steak would turn the evening into a treat.
