This week two wines from O’Briens on special offer until July 21st. The Côtes de Gascogne is a very large area covering the Gers region of southwest France. Most of the wine produced is white, typically made from local varieties such as ugni blanc, gros manseng and colombard, although you will find some sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. They are usually inexpensive and offer great value for money.
Rioja Reserva is very popular in this country. Some can be a little too oaky, but I thought the Acuro organic wine avoids that pitfall and offers good value for money.
Duffour Père & Fils Côtes de Gascogne 2023
11.5% abv, €10 down from €13.95 at O’Briens
Light and refreshing with generous textured pear and melon fruits given energy by the crisp lemon zest, and a rounded finish. Try it with grilled sea bass.
Acuro Organic Rioja Reserva 2017

Seductive ripe raspberry and strawberry fruits overlaid with vanilla spice and a smooth finish. Very good value at the offer price. Enjoy it with lamb dishes or bean and tomato casseroles.
