Two wines offering exceptional value for money

As regular readers will know, I am a fan of the wines made by Laurent Miquel. The viognier below is no exception. At a recent tasting, it stood out as offering exceptional value for money. I reckon it would be a perfect barbecue white, served alongside grilled fish, chicken or vegetables. I am also a fan of the wines made by New Zealander Matt Thomson. He makes a range of wines in both northern and southern hemispheres, including the Rapaura Springs below.

Dripping with succulent peaches and nectarines that are brought to life by a nervy streak of acidity. Great value for money. Try it with spicy or grilled fish, chicken and pork.

Rapaura Springs Pinot Noir €15.20

Abv 13.5%; €15.20, down from €19 at Dunnes Sores

Elegant and smooth with very seductive ripe red fruits and a hint of spice on the finish. Suited paired with mushroom dishes, grilled salmon steaks, or pasta with fresh tomato sauce.
