RACING: Racing at Punchestown tomorrow is rated at only 50-50. An inspection has been called for 8.30 this morning after heavy rain left the course almost unraceable yesterday.
"We had half an inch of rain in the morning and it is still continuing. The Met office tell us it is supposed to stop gradually and that would help greatly.
"It is very close to unraceable now and I would rate the chances of racing at no more than 50-50," said the Punchestown spokesman, Richie Galway.
The feature race tomorrow is the Morgiana Hurdle where Limestone Lad is set to tackle Liss A Paoraigh and Knife Edge.
"Quietly confident" was the report from Navan ahead of their Sunday card.
Almost 30 mms fell on the track yesterday resulting in some surface water. However, the going remains officially soft.
"The alarm bells aren't tolling and if we get 12 dry hours we should be fine. The forecast looks okay, so we are quietly confident of going ahead," said the Navan manager Richard Lyttle.
No problems are expected at Wexford which escaped the worst of the bad weather in the south-east.
"God was on our side. We were forecast to get an inch and a half to two inches but we got less than half an inch," said the Wexford manager, Michael Murphy. "A couple of miles up the road, they got two inches of rain. We have been very lucky and everything is fine for the weekend."
Mick Fitzgerald has delayed his return to action after narrowly escaping serious injury in a crashing final-fence fall on Mighty Strong at Newbury on Wednesday.
The Irishman was hoping to come back at Cheltenham today, but he has decided to wait another 24 hours.
"Both shoulders feel like they've been hit with a sledgehammer," Fitzgerald said. "I was fully conscious throughout the whole thing and really it's a case of getting back to full fitness and hopefully be back for the weekend.
