Former Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels has been named as the new Derry City manager.

The 59-year-old from Magherafelt has previously managed in the Irish League, where he also played during his career.

Shiels’s last managerial position was with BEC Tero Sasana in Thailand, leaving in August 2015.

Derry City finished seventh in the Premier Division table this season, with Paul Hegarty steering helping the side to safety after taking over from Peter Hutton as head coach in September. Hegarty turned down the chance to take on the role on a full-time basis.
