Ireland international Jack Byrne returns to Shamrock Rovers

Four times capped midfielder returns after injury-plagued stint at APOEL in Cyprus

Shamrock Rovers have confirmed the resigning of Jack Byrne.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who has four Republic of Ireland caps to his name, returns to the Tallaght club after an injury-plagued spell at APOEL.

Byrne signed for the Cypriot side in January 2021 and linked up with former Ireland head coach Mick McCarthy. Their reunion did not last long though as McCarthy was dismissed shortly after Byrne’s arrival.

A back injury caused Byrne to miss plenty of time during his time in Cyprus, and he was allowed to leave the club before seeing out until his contract. His initial deal was supposed to run until 2023, only for Byrne to depart in September of this year.

He appeared on just five occasions during his nine-month APOEL stint.

Byrne had been reported to be on his way back to Rovers, who he initially joined in 2018 from Scottish side Kilmarnock, with the club confirming the news in a social media post on Friday morning.
